Etymology of the word "etymology"

In Wiktionary etymology of the word "etymology" is given as: From Middle English ethymologie, from Old French ethimologie, from Latin etymologia, from Ancient Greek ἐτυμολογία (etumología), from ἔτυμον (étumon, “true sense”) and -λογία (-logía, “study of”), from λόγος (lógos, “word; explanation”).

The above is the universally accepted explanation and it is correct, but needs further etymology. This is the idea behind the practice of etymology to go as far back in time as possible.

ἔτῠμον (étumon) derives ἔτῠμος (étumos) which means "true, real, sure". And this word, ἔτῠμος (étumos) is either from or closely related to ἐτεός (eteós, “true”).

So far so good.

Now, when we go one step further and check the source of the Greek word eteós, we see this in Wiktionary: ἐτεός (eteós, “true”)

"Possibly cognate with Armenian ստոյգ (stoyg), from Proto-Indo-European *set- (“stable, true”) (Beekes, 2010).

However, compare Sanskrit सत्य (satya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsatyás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁s-n̥t-yós, from *h₁sónts, from *h₁es- (“to be”)."

Here, we observe that further etymology is not clear and there seems to be multiple suggestions.

Can we find a clear, correct etymology for "eteos" which means "true" ?

The answer is yes but we should look beyond Greece, to Mesopotamia and the Near East.

Sumerian Sun God Utu and Greek Eteós, (“true”)

Utu was the Sumerian god of sun, justice, morality, and truth and twin brother of Inanna.

The answer then, is easy, because it fits in both sound and meaning:

Utu+us=Utuus, hence Eteos after u > e.

So the Ancient Greek word was formed after Sumerian sun god Utu with the addition of Indo-European marker -us and a common vowel change. (please see the origins of IE "-us" here: etymology of daughter, milker, child, tribe, family, clan )

The etymology is straightforward, the question though is this: how could Sumerian influence Ancient Greece which flourished after the fall of Sumerian city states in Mesopotamia?

The answer is now firm thanks to genetics supported migration information. The founders of Ancient Greece had migrated from Anatolia and had ancestry from Iran and the Caucasus where Hurrians and later Hitties lived. We already know the strong influence of Sumerian on these two cultures. See:

Sun Language Theory

Turkish academics say whatever the West tells them to say and there are too few people interested in history or languages in Turkey.

After Ataturk's death in 1938, Western propaganda arms told people in Turkey: "Nothing to see here, go find your written history records in Asia." And everyone in Turkey obeyed because, maybe except a few people out of tens of millions, there was no real Ataturkist in Turkey back then, just like today.
